Fundraising Marathon
Dear Friends, Family, and Neighbors,
I am writing this to let you know that I have registered to run a marathon for charity – the New Jersey Marathon on May 1st, 2011. I will be doing this charity run as part of Team Running on Love, a NJ Non-Profit 501(c)(3) corporation. Running on Love organizes charitable fundraising events for individuals helping them support noble and worthy causes of their own choosing.
In this marathon run, I will be completing the event in loving memory of my mother, Pearl Lucille Harvey and have chosen to support two charities that are dear to me; The Transfiguration Scholarship Fund a 501(c)(3) corporation providing scholarships for inner-city children and The Light of Pearl Foundation – a children’s cancer foundation. http://www.lightofpearl.org/
Along with hundreds of other runners who will be there that day, I will be running 26.2 miles at this event as a symbol of hope, endurance and unconditional love. This will be an incredible challenge for me as running marathons always are. It will also be a very personal mission for me as I do this in loving memory of my mother, who passed away more than 42 years ago from cervical cancer. This journey will be very sweet and very emotional as I do this act of charity as a loving tribute. With every step I take, I will think of my Mom and my love for her.
Making a donation is easy! Just make a check payable to Running on Love, and mail it to my address listed above. If you prefer to use a credit card, you can visit my Running on Love Fundraising website at:
Another option is to purchase amazing PartyLite scented candles to help me raise funds. Ask me for brochure & order forms.
It would be greatly appreciated if all donations were in by April 14, 2011; I will stay in touch with you to bring you stories about my training and this marathon event. Thank you in advance for your support and generosity!
All my blessings,
John

On Love - Valentine's Day
Just sharing my thoughts on Love.
On July 7, 2011 my wife Faye and I will be married, and in love for 27 'short' years!
Many people have difficulty accepting that we were not 'in love ' when we got married.
Six months after Faye and I met for the first time we were married.
We did not 'fall' in love we made a "decision" to love each other. We committed ourselves to loving
each other; to love and to hold and to care for each other for the rest of our lives. You may ask, how we
could make such a commitment - the answer is simply, we were ready.
We believe that love is so much more than just a feeling. Love is a decision. And Faye and I make that decision,
to love each other everyday.
I want to testify here that the greatest preparation for marriage that we experienced was the "Engaged Encounter Weekend"
An experience I believe was significant in my wife becoming Catholic through the RCIA program - so that we should be 'equally yoked' in our beliefs.
We surround ourselves with people and things that support our love for each other and we have committed to living many, many more years in love.
Below is a verse on love and marriage from one of my favorite sages. We had this printed in our wedding invitations. It has been a source of wisdom and guidance over the years.
Happy Valentine's Day

On Marriage by Kahlil Gibran
You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days.
Ay, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music. Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.Thursday, December 9, 2010
Things I’m Passionate About - Speech
David Brooks, past International Speech Champion advises that the best speeches are written down word-for-word. I'd like to share my speech from the Toastmasters Competent Communicator manual project #1, The Ice-Breaker.
“The happiness of a man in this life does not consist in the absence but in the mastery of his passions. Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809 - 1892)
3) I love creating things with my hands, being a self-taught carpenter I’ve built 4 built-in closets, and numerous small construction projects around my home. I became a telecommunications technician while living and finishing school in the UK because I wanted to use my hands. 10 years later, In 1984 I started a leather handicraft business and worked together with my wife building that business for 12 years. Two months ago I built a workshop to start making leather products again on a part-time basis and also to paint when so inspired. Samples of the unique handcrafted creations and one-of-a-kind, personalized designs that HarTech Artisans makes can soon be found on www.etsy.com 20% of all profits from this activity goes to The Light Of Pearl Foundation www.lightofpearl.org a children’s cancer and education charity founded in memory of my Mom, Pearl Lucille Harvey, who passed away 12/23/1968.

Mr. Toastmaster, fellow Toastmasters, welcomed guests, as we enter into the season of gift-giving I believe the greatest gift we have ever received is the gift of CHOICE. We all have a choice in life, we can choose to complain about the hand that life has dealt us, or, we can choose to make the most of our personal experiences. I have committed myself to live a happy life...I have chosen to live a life with purpose. I have made up my mind that whatever I do, I will do it, with passion.
You may have heard the saying, “A man is known, not by what he says but by what he does” and so I would like to share with you some of my life’s passions.
1) When I was a teenager growing up in the United Kingdom I set myself a lifelong ambition; to visit every country in the world all 195 of them! I love to travel. So far I have been to 17 countries. I have visited Scotland, Ireland, France, Germany, Venezuela, Suriname, Grenada, St. Vincent, Jamaica, Barbados, Canada, Bahamas. Turks & Caicos. I’ve lived in 4 countries, Trinidad & Tobago, the country of my birth, United Kingdom, Guyana and now in the USA. I have been fortunate enough to go on two Caribbean cruises in the past 12 months. Plans are now in the works to do a ‘road-trip’ a drive from New Jersey to California and back.
2) I love being musical, both singing and playing instruments – my Dad is a music teacher; he taught me that my body is the greatest musical instrument! The ABC of music is the Diatonic Scale also known as Sol-fa. (Sung) Doh re mi fa sol la ti doh’, doh’ ti la sol fa mi re doh. That is what I sing to maintain focus when I run.

4) I love to run, not being very fast I moved up to longer and longer distances. Last month I completed my 14th marathon and I have devoted all my running to raise funds for charity. I recently joined forces with a wonderful charity called Running on Love http://www.active.com/donate/NJM2011/Team1JHarvey to raise funds for the Light of Pearl Foundation…. My long term goal is to run at least one marathon each year for the next 25 years.
5) And finally through my experience with Toastmasters, I have grown to love public speaking. As part of my purposeful living I have chosen to devote myself to speaking to inspire. In sharing my life experience it is my hope that others are inspired, not just to float through life but to make waves.
All I have done, all I have yet to accomplish, can be encapsulated in this statement of pure gratitude by John Bradford; “There but for the grace of God go I.”
Mr. Toastmaster.
